Abstract

Museums are cultural institutions that play a strategic role in preserving, maintaining, developing, and communicating cultural heritage to the public. Attention toward museums in Indonesia continues to grow, evidenced by enhanced collection management, the organization of diverse educational activities, and increased public engagement in museum operations. Nevertheless, museums still face challenges, particularly regarding public perception; they are often viewed merely as repositories for ancient artifacts, unappealing spaces, or venues with monotonous collection displays. Such perceptions can dampen public interest in visiting museums for both leisure and learning. This article aims to analyze and describe how to strengthen the museum's role as an educational tourism destination and a vehicle for non-formal, cultural heritage-based education. The study employs a qualitative approach using descriptive methods and a literature review. Data were gathered from relevant sources—including books, scholarly articles, policy documents, research reports, and other materials—pertaining to museums, educational tourism, non-formal education, and cultural heritage. The data were analyzed using a descriptive-interpretative approach, involving the identification, categorization, and interpretation of relevant concepts and research findings. The study reveals that museums hold significant potential for development beyond their traditional roles as sites for the conservation and storage of historical artifacts; they can also serve as educational tourism destinations and spaces for non-formal public education. Strengthening these functions can be achieved through innovative collection displays, the development of educational programs, the use of digital technology, the creation of interactive visitor experiences, and increased engagement with the public and cultural communities. Museums managed through creative and participatory approaches can offer enjoyable learning experiences while deepening public understanding of history, identity, and cultural values. Thus, reinforcing the museum's role as an educational tourism destination and a vehicle for non-formal, cultural heritage-based education serves as a vital strategy to enhance museum appeal, expand public access to learning, and ensure the sustainable preservation of cultural heritage for future generations.
